Sport Rifle

Standing precision shooting with telescopic sights

About Sport Rifle

Sport rifle combines the challenge of standing unsupported shooting with the advantage of telescopic sights. Shooters fire .22LR or air rifles from a standing position at 20 metres, using scopes to aim at precision targets. It’s an accessible yet challenging discipline that appeals to shooters of all ages.

The Discipline

Key Characteristics

  • Position: Standing, unsupported
  • Distance: 20 metres
  • Rifle Types: .22LR or air rifle
  • Sights: Telescopic sights (scopes)
  • Support: No artificial support - free standing
  • Popular: One of the most popular NSRA disciplines

Our Facilities

Sport rifle can be shot on our Scott Langley 20m range and other suitable ranges at the club. The indoor facilities provide consistent conditions ideal for developing standing shooting skills.

Why Try Sport Rifle?

Accessible Challenge

Telescopic sights make aiming easier than iron sights, while the standing position still provides a real challenge. Perfect balance of accessibility and difficulty.

Equipment Flexibility

Shoot with either air rifles or .22LR - many shooters use the same rifle they use for other disciplines, just adding a scope.

Active Shooting

Standing shooting is more dynamic than prone or benched positions. It’s a great workout for core stability and body control.

Social & Competitive

Popular discipline means plenty of competition opportunities and fellow enthusiasts to shoot with and learn from.

The Standing Position

Standing is the least stable of the traditional shooting positions, making it both challenging and rewarding. Success requires excellent body control and proper technique.

Position Elements

  • Stance: Feet shoulder-width apart, body turned roughly 90° to target
  • Balance: Weight evenly distributed, stable base
  • Rifle Support: Left hand under forearm, right hand on grip (right-handed shooters)
  • Body Contact: Rifle stock against shoulder, consistent cheek weld
  • Muscle Relaxation: Use skeletal structure for support, not muscles
  • Natural Point of Aim: Body naturally aligns with target

Developing Your Position

Finding your optimal standing position takes experimentation. Our coaches will help you develop a position that’s both stable and comfortable for your body type. Small adjustments can make big differences in your scores.

Equipment

Getting Started

The club has rifles available for new members. For sport rifle, you’ll need a rifle with a scope mounted. We can help you get started with club equipment.

Your Own Equipment

When you’re ready to purchase:

  • Rifle: .22LR or air rifle suitable for target shooting
  • Scope: 4-12x magnification typical (higher magnification makes wobble more apparent)
  • Scope Mounts: Quality mounts for consistent zero
  • Sling: Optional but can aid stability
  • Shooting Jacket: Specialized jacket for support (optional)
  • Ammunition: Match-grade pellets (air) or cartridges (.22LR)

Scope Selection Tips

  • Lower magnification (4-8x) is easier for beginners
  • Higher magnification shows more detail but amplifies wobble
  • Quality matters more than magnification
  • Adjustable parallax is helpful for 20m shooting
  • Good scope can be moved between rifles

Skills Developed

Sport rifle shooting develops important skills:

  • Body Control: Maintaining stability without support
  • Core Strength: Standing position works your core muscles
  • Breath Control: Timing shots with breathing cycle
  • Trigger Control: Smooth trigger press while maintaining aim
  • Follow Through: Maintaining position during and after shot
  • Mental Game: Staying calm and focused despite movement
  • Wobble Management: Accepting and working with natural movement

Air Rifle vs .22LR

Air Rifle Sport

  • Lower cost per shot
  • Less recoil (easier to master trigger control)
  • Quieter operation
  • More sensitive to shooting technique
  • Great for practice and learning

.22LR Sport Rifle

  • More traditional feel
  • Greater challenge with recoil management
  • Different competition classes available
  • Can be more satisfying for some shooters

Both are valid choices - many shooters enjoy both! Start with whichever appeals to you or try both to see which you prefer.

Competitions

Sport rifle has an active competition scene:

  • Club Competitions: Regular internal matches
  • County Events: Represent the club at regional level
  • NSRA Championships: National competitions for both air and .22LR
  • Postal Leagues: Shoot at your home range, submit scores
  • Inter-Club Matches: Team competitions
  • Open Competitions: Various clubs host open events

Competition Format

Typical sport rifle competitions:

  • 10 or 20 shots for score
  • Sighters allowed before scoring
  • Time limit (usually ample time)
  • Scored on NSRA target
  • Separate classes for air and .22LR
  • Often graded classes (A, B, C) for fair competition

Training & Coaching

We provide comprehensive sport rifle training:

  • Position Development: Finding your optimal standing position
  • Stability Training: Exercises to improve standing stability
  • Scope Use: Getting the most from your telescopic sights
  • Improvers Evening: Monday sessions for skill development
  • Competition Coaching: Match preparation and mental game

Embrace the Wobble

In standing shooting, some movement is inevitable - even Olympic champions wobble! The key is learning to time your shots when the crosshairs pass through the target center. Don’t fight the wobble; work with it.

Physical Considerations

Standing shooting is more physically demanding than supported positions:

  • Endurance: Holding the rifle steady requires sustained muscle engagement
  • Core Strength: Good core stability helps maintain position
  • Flexibility: Some flexibility helps achieve optimal position
  • Building Stamina: Start with shorter sessions and build up

However, sport rifle can be adapted for different abilities. Shooting sticks or other aids can be used in practice, and there are various competition classes to ensure fair competition.
