Range Commands

Standard commands for safe range operations

Understanding Range Commands

Range commands are standardized instructions used by the Range Conducting Officer (RCO) to control range activities. Understanding and responding correctly to these commands is essential for safe shooting.

Command Authority

All commands come from the Range Conducting Officer. When a command is given, all shooters must comply immediately. If you’re unsure about a command, ask for clarification before proceeding.

Essential Commands

”STOP” or “CEASE FIRE”

When: Emergency situations or immediate cessation required

Action Required:

  • Immediately stop shooting
  • Remove finger from trigger
  • Keep firearm pointed downrange
  • Do not touch the firearm further until instructed
  • Wait for RCO instructions

This is the most important command. Everyone on the range must respond instantly.

Preparation Phase

”Take your firing points”

Shooters may move to their designated firing positions on the line.

”Preparation time will start in X minutes”

Advance notice before the official preparation period begins.

”Load”

Shooters may load their firearms. The range is now “hot” - firearms may be loaded but not yet fired.

Shooting Phase

”You may commence firing”

Shooting may begin. Fire only when safe to do so and only at your designated target.

”One minute remaining”

Warning that firing time is nearly over. Complete your shots.

”Stop firing”

Shooting must cease immediately. Complete your current shot if the trigger has been pressed, but do not fire again.

Making Safe

”Unload”

Action Required:

  • Remove all ammunition from the firearm
  • Open the action/bolt
  • Visually check the chamber is clear
  • Leave the action open
  • Place the firearm down pointing downrange

”Unload and show clear”

As above, but wait for the RCO to visually verify your firearm is clear before proceeding.

”Pistols down” (Air Pistol)

For air pistol shooting - place pistols on the bench pointing downrange, actions open.

Target Changing

”The range is clear”

All firearms have been made safe and verified. The range is no longer “hot”.

”Change targets” or “Go forward”

Shooters may go downrange to change or collect targets. Never handle firearms during this time.

”Return to the firing line”

Complete target changes and return behind the line. Do not handle firearms yet.

Competition Commands

During competitions, additional commands may be used:

“Preparation time commences now”

Official start of the preparation period for competition.

”Details” or “Details for the X-minute match”

RCO provides match specifics before shooting begins.

”Timing will start in X seconds”

Countdown to the official start of timed shooting.

Clarification Commands

If You Hear...

  • ”Muzzle” - Someone’s firearm is not pointed in a safe direction. Check yours immediately.
  • ”Finger” - Someone has their finger on the trigger when they shouldn’t. Check yours.
  • ”Flag” - Insert a flag or indicator in your action to show it’s clear.

Correct Response to Commands

Best Practices

  • Listen: Pay attention to all commands at all times
  • Acknowledge: A nod or verbal “Yes” shows you’ve understood
  • Act Immediately: Especially for safety commands like “STOP”
  • Ask: If you’re unsure, ask for clarification before acting
  • Wait: Don’t anticipate commands - wait for the actual instruction

Your Responsibilities

  • Knowing and understanding all standard range commands
  • Following commands immediately and correctly
  • Maintaining safe firearm handling at all times
  • Alerting the RCO if you see any unsafe situations
  • Asking for help if you’re unsure about anything
