Three-Position Rifle

The complete test of rifle shooting skill

What is Three-Position Rifle?

Three-position rifle shooting combines prone (lying), standing, and kneeling positions in a single event. It’s the ultimate test of rifle shooting versatility, requiring mastery of all three positions. Both an Olympic discipline (.22LR at 50m) and popular NSRA discipline, it’s considered the most complete rifle shooting challenge.

Three shooting positions: prone, standing, kneeling

How It Works

The Basics

  • Distance: 50 metres (Olympic), or 50 feet, 20 yards, 25 yards (NSRA)
  • Positions: Prone, standing, kneeling (equal number of shots in each)
  • Order: Typically kneeling → prone → standing (from easiest to hardest)
  • Caliber: .22LR for Olympic/50m, air rifle for shorter distances
  • Sights: Aperture (diopter) sights - no magnification
  • Target: 50m ISSF rifle target with decimal scoring
  • Equipment: Shooting jacket, sling, specialised mat allowed

Olympic Format (50m Rifle 3-Position)

ISSF/Olympic Rules:

  • Kneeling: 15 shots in 30 minutes (including sighters)
  • Prone: 15 shots in 30 minutes
  • Standing: 15 shots in 30 minutes
  • Total: 45 shots, maximum score 654.0 (10.9 × 45)
  • Finals: Top 8 shooters advance to elimination final

Men and women shoot this event at Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World Championships

NSRA Format (Shorter Distances)

UK Club Format:

  • Distance: 20 yards, 25 yards, or 50 feet
  • Positions: 10 or 20 shots per position
  • Common course: 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 shots total
  • Air rifle or .22LR: Both used at club level
  • More accessible: Shorter distances, fewer shots for beginners

Olympic Heritage

Three-position rifle has been an Olympic event since 1952 (men) and 1984 (women). It’s governed by ISSF internationally and by British Shooting in the UK for Olympic pathways. The NSRA also runs three-position events at various distances.

The Three Positions Explained

1. Prone Position

Lying flat, rifle supported by elbows and sling. Most stable position - typically highest scores achieved here.

  • Advantages: Maximum stability, bone-supported, easiest to hold steady
  • Challenges: Must build position quickly under time pressure
  • Typical scores: 98-100 out of 100 for advanced shooters

2. Kneeling Position

Kneeling on right knee (for right-handers), sitting on ankle, left elbow supported on left knee. Moderately stable position.

  • Advantages: More stable than standing, relatively comfortable
  • Challenges: Finding optimal knee position, maintaining consistency
  • Typical scores: 92-96 out of 100 for advanced shooters

3. Standing Position

Standing unsupported (sling allowed for arm support). Most difficult position - natural body sway makes holding steady very challenging.

  • Advantages: Quick to build, no mat needed
  • Challenges: Least stable, hardest to master, mental pressure
  • Typical scores: 85-92 out of 100 for advanced shooters

Rifle Requirements

Three-position rifles have specific requirements:

  • Weight limit: Maximum 8kg including sights (ISSF rules)
  • Aperture sights: Diopter front and rear sights (no magnification)
  • Stock design: Adjustable cheekpiece and buttplate
  • Balance: Good balance for standing position critical
  • Popular models: Anschütz 1913, Walther KK500, Feinwerkbau 2700

Firearms Certificate Required

.22LR rifles require a Section 1 Firearms Certificate. For 50m Olympic-level shooting, you’ll need .22LR. Air rifle three-position (at shorter distances) requires no certificate for sub-12 ft/lbs rifles. Learn about certificates.

Training & Progression

How to Progress in Three-Position

  1. Start with prone: Master prone position first - it’s the foundation. Build solid technique before adding complexity.

  2. Add kneeling: Once confident in prone, learn kneeling. Find your optimal position through experimentation.

  3. Tackle standing: Most difficult position. Requires patience and practice. Don’t get discouraged by initial low scores.

  4. Shoot singles first: Practice each position separately before combining into full three-position matches.

  5. Build endurance: Gradually increase to full-length matches. 45-60 shots is physically and mentally demanding.

  6. Get coaching: Position-specific coaching accelerates improvement dramatically.

Common Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Poor Standing Scores

Solution: Everyone struggles with standing. Focus on hold control, not perfection. Strengthen core. Practice standing separate from three-position matches. Accept that standing scores will be lower - it’s normal.

Challenge: Time Pressure

Solution: Practice with timer. Develop efficient position building. Know exactly how long your routine takes. Don’t rush shots but don’t waste time either. Time management improves with experience.

Challenge: Mental Fatigue

Solution: Build mental endurance through practice. Stay in present moment

  • don’t dwell on previous positions. Take brief mental breaks between positions. Hydrate and fuel properly before matches.

Challenge: Kneeling Position Pain

Solution: Use proper kneeling roll size. Experiment with roll placement. Build position gradually over weeks. Some discomfort is normal but shouldn’t be severe. Ensure shooting boots fit well.
