Practical Shooting

Dynamic action shooting disciplines

Limited Availability at Pinhoe TSC

Pinhoe TSC offers Action Air - a dynamic air pistol discipline similar to practical shooting. We do NOT offer practical shotgun, IPSC rifle, or full Gallery Rifle courses due to range configuration.

For comprehensive practical shooting disciplines, contact UKPSA or check NRA UK for Gallery Rifle. This page provides educational information about practical shooting in the UK.

What is Practical Shooting?

Practical shooting is a dynamic discipline that combines speed, accuracy, and tactical thinking. Unlike static target shooting, practical involves movement, multiple targets, barricades, and timed stages. Shooters engage targets in varying positions, often “on the clock,” making split-second decisions about shot order and movement.

Main Practical Disciplines in the UK

Gallery Rifle (NRA UK)

Gallery Rifle is the UK’s traditional practical rifle discipline, governed by the NRA UK. Shot at short to medium ranges (25-50 yards) with .22LR rifles or long-barreled pistols.

Main Formats:

  • Timed & Precision 1 (T&P1): Mixed timed and precision stages. 30 rounds in total. Combines speed shooting with accuracy challenges.

  • Multi-Target: Engaging multiple targets in sequence. Tests target transition speed and shot placement.

  • Falling Plates: Knock down steel plates as quickly as possible. Pure speed and accuracy test.

  • Gallery Rifle Variants: Centerfire Gallery Rifle (using larger calibers), specific rules for different rifle types

Gallery Rifle is accessible - uses standard .22LR target rifles. More dynamic than prone/benchrest but less equipment-intensive than full IPSC.

IPSC/Practical Shotgun (UKPSA)

The United Kingdom Practical Shooting Association (UKPSA) governs IPSC-style practical shooting adapted for UK firearms laws. Courses of fire with movement, cover, and multiple targets.

Disciplines:

  • Practical Shotgun: Dynamic courses with pump-action or semi-auto shotguns. Paper and steel targets. Three divisions: Standard (iron sights), Modified (optics), Open (advanced modifications). Very popular in UK.

  • Mini Rifle (.22LR): Practical shooting adapted for .22 carbines. Movement, barricades, multiple targets. Less recoil than centerfire, more accessible.

  • Action Air Pistol: Air pistol practical stages. Indoor-friendly, no firearms certificate needed for sub-6 ft/lbs pistols.

Note: Traditional IPSC handgun divisions are heavily restricted in UK due to handgun ban. Long-barreled pistols used where applicable, but practical shotgun is the main UKPSA discipline.

Action Air (Various Organizations)

Action Air brings practical shooting excitement to air pistols and rifles. Perfect for clubs with limited range space. Available at Pinhoe TSC!

  • Courses of fire: Multiple paper and steel targets, movement between positions

  • Equipment: Air pistols (most common) or air rifles, no certificate needed

  • Scoring: Combines accuracy (hits on target) with speed (total time)

  • Indoor-friendly: Can be set up in standard indoor ranges

  • Low cost: Minimal ammunition expense, accessible equipment

How Practical Shooting Works

Stage Design

Practical shooting stages are courses of fire with specific challenges:

  • Targets: Paper targets (scored zones) and steel targets (audible hits)
  • Positions: Shooting boxes, barricades, ports, moving while shooting
  • Engagement: Specified minimum rounds per target, tactical decisions on order
  • Props: Barrels, walls, doors, windows - simulating real-world scenarios
  • Time limits: Some stages timed, others scored on time + accuracy combined

Scoring Systems

Comstock Scoring

Points divided by time = hit factor. Encourages speed and accuracy balance. Shoot as fast or slow as you want. Used in most IPSC/UKPSA events.

Virginia Count

Fixed number of rounds, fixed par time. Penalties for misses or overtime. Used in some Gallery Rifle formats. Tests ability to perform under time pressure.
