Lightweight Sporting Rifle (LSR)

The accessible standing position discipline

Available at Pinhoe TSC

What is Lightweight Sporting Rifle?

Lightweight Sporting Rifle (LSR) is a standing position discipline designed to be accessible to all shooters. Shot at 20 metres with telescopic sights, it requires no specialised shooting clothing, slings, or expensive equipment. It’s the perfect introduction to standing rifle shooting and popular with beginners and experienced shooters alike.

LSR standing shooting position

How It Works

The Basics

  • Distance: 20 metres (sometimes 20 yards or 25 metres)
  • Position: Standing, unsupported (no sling allowed)
  • Sights: Telescopic sights only (4x-12x typical)
  • Rifle type: Any .22LR or air rifle meeting weight limits
  • Clothing: No specialised shooting jackets or boots required
  • Target: 20m LSR target or 50m ISSF rifle target reduced
  • Courses: Typically 20, 30, or 40 shots

What Makes LSR Special?

LSR was created as an accessible discipline that removes barriers to entry:

  • No sling: Rifle held unsupported, testing pure shooting ability
  • No shooting jacket: Shoot in normal comfortable clothing
  • No special boots: Regular footwear is fine
  • Affordable rifles: Any accurate rifle with scope works
  • Shorter distance: 20m is more forgiving than 50m Olympic standing
  • Scope sights: Easier to use than aperture sights for many people

Also Called Sport Rifle

LSR is sometimes called “Sport Rifle” or “Sporting Rifle.” It’s the same discipline - standing position at 20m with scopes. At Pinhoe TSC we refer to it as Sport Rifle in our shooting styles section.

Why Try LSR?

Low Entry Cost

No expensive shooting clothing or specialised equipment needed to compete.

Pure Skill

Success depends on technique and practice, not equipment budget.

Easier Sighting

Scopes are more intuitive than aperture sights for most beginners.

Accessible Challenge

Standing without sling is challenging but achievable with practice.

Social Discipline

Friendly, inclusive atmosphere at competitions. All levels welcome.

NSRA Support

Well-established NSRA discipline with national competitions and postal leagues.

Air Rifle vs .22LR LSR

LSR can be shot with either air rifles or .22LR rifles. Both have their advantages:

Air Rifle LSR

  • No certificate: Start immediately, no firearms licence
  • Indoor year-round: Shoot regardless of weather
  • Cheaper ammunition: Pellets cost less than .22LR
  • No recoil: Easier to learn fundamentals
  • Instant feedback: Electronic targets show each shot
  • Perfect for beginners: Best starting point

.22LR LSR

  • Requires certificate: Section 1 Firearms Certificate needed
  • Traditional rimfire: Classic feel of rimfire shooting
  • More power: Less affected by air currents
  • Competition standard: Many competitions use .22LR
  • Progression discipline: Natural step after air rifle
  • Same technique: Skills transfer directly from air LSR

Skills Developed

Physical Skills

  • Body stability: Learning to minimize natural sway
  • Core strength: Holding rifle steady unsupported
  • Breath control: Coordinating breathing with shots
  • Trigger control: Smooth release without disturbing aim
  • Stance development: Finding your optimal standing position

Mental Skills

  • Concentration: Maintaining focus through courses of fire
  • Hold control: Accepting natural wobble, timing shots
  • Patience: Waiting for optimal moment to shoot
  • Consistency: Repeating same process every shot
  • Resilience: Recovering mentally from poor shots

Equipment Guide

For Beginners

Start with club rifles to learn the discipline before purchasing equipment. Any accurate rifle with a scope will work for LSR - it’s one of the least equipment-dependent disciplines.

Essential Equipment

  • Rifle: Any .22LR or air rifle (£200-£1,500) - club rifles available
  • Scope: 4-12x variable scope (£80-£500) - magnification helps with precision
  • Ammunition: Match pellets or .22LR cartridges
  • Comfortable clothing: Normal clothes - no special gear needed!
  • Eye protection: Clear shooting glasses (£15-£50)

What You DON’T Need

  • ❌ Shooting jacket (prohibited in LSR)
  • ❌ Shooting boots (normal shoes are fine)
  • ❌ Sling (not allowed in LSR)
  • ❌ Specialized trousers
  • ❌ Expensive match rifle (any accurate rifle works)

The Most Democratic Discipline

LSR is often called the most democratic shooting discipline because everyone competes on equal terms - no equipment advantages. A £300 rifle with a decent scope can beat a £3,000 custom rifle if the shooter has better technique.

Technique & Training

Building Your Standing Position

  1. Foot position: Feet shoulder-width apart, at comfortable angle to target. Weight evenly distributed or slightly forward.

  2. Body alignment: Stand at roughly 45 degrees to target line. Hips forward, upper body relaxed.

  3. Rifle support: Left hand (for right-handers) under fore-end, elbow against or near ribcage for support.

  4. Stock placement: Butt firmly in shoulder pocket, consistent placement every shot.

  5. Cheek weld: Cheek on stock at same spot every time, natural eye-to-scope alignment.

  6. Natural point of aim: Position body so rifle naturally points at target when you relax. Don’t muscle the rifle onto target.

Dealing with Hold

Everyone wobbles in standing position - it’s unavoidable. The key is managing your hold:

  • Accept the wobble: Don’t fight it, work with it
  • Minimize arc of movement: Good position reduces wobble area
  • Shoot in the middle: Time shots when crosshairs pass through center
  • Don’t snatch: Smooth trigger pull even when wobbling
  • Trust your technique: Follow same process regardless of hold quality
