Full Bore Rifle Shooting
Long-range precision rifle shooting in the UK
Not Offered at Pinhoe TSC
Pinhoe Target Shooting Club specializes in .22LR smallbore and air rifle/pistol disciplines. We do not offer full bore rifle shooting. This page provides educational information about full bore shooting in the UK and directs you to appropriate resources.
Many of our members also shoot full bore at Bisley and other approved ranges. For full bore shooting, contact the National Rifle Association (NRA).
What is Full Bore Rifle Shooting?
Full bore rifle shooting involves precision shooting at long range (typically 300-1000 yards) using high-powered rifles chambered in .223 Remington (5.56mm) to .308 Winchester (7.62mm). It’s the most traditional form of rifle shooting in the UK, with a rich history dating back over 150 years at Bisley. The discipline emphasizes wind reading, position, and marksmanship fundamentals.
Full bore rifle shooting
Main Full Bore Disciplines
Target Rifle (TR)
The most traditional and popular full bore discipline in the UK. Shooting from prone position with iron sights (aperture rear, post front) at distances from 300-1000 yards.
Equipment
- Calibre: Typically .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO)
- Sights: Iron sights only - no optics or telescopes
- Position: Prone with sling support
- Weight: Typically 5-6kg (11-13lbs)
Distances
Standard TR competitions are shot at “short range” (300-600 yards) and “long range” (900-1000 yards). The Queen’s Prize (Imperial Meeting) includes stages at 300, 500, 600, 900, and 1000 yards.
Wind Reading
Reading wind conditions is the defining skill in TR shooting. At 1000 yards, a 10mph crosswind can move the bullet over 100 inches. Shooters use flags, mirage, and experience to adjust their sights between shots.
F-Class (F-Open and F-TR)
Long-range precision shooting from prone position with telescopic sights and front rest (bipod or bench rest). More accessible than TR for those with vision limitations or physical challenges.
F-TR (Target Rifle)
- Calibre: .223 Remington or .308 Winchester only
- Weight: 8.25kg (18.15lbs) maximum with sights
- Sights: Any telescopic sight allowed
- Rest: Attached bipod, rear bag
F-Open
- Calibre: Any calibre up to .35” (often 6mm, 6.5mm)
- Weight: 10kg (22lbs) maximum with sights
- Sights: Any telescopic sight allowed
- Rest: Any front rest (heavy pedestal rests common)
Gallery Rifle
Indoor shooting at 15-25 metres with pistol-calibre rifles (e.g., 9mm, .38 Special). More affordable and accessible than long-range full bore. Often shot at NSRA clubs including Pinhoe TSC for experienced members with Section 1 firearms.

Note: Pinhoe TSC does have facilities for Gallery Rifle (pistol-calibre centrefire) for members with appropriate firearms licensing. Contact the club for details about Gallery Rifle shooting on our indoor ranges.
