10m Air Rifle
Olympic precision shooting discipline
What is 10m Air Rifle?
10m air rifle is an Olympic shooting discipline where competitors fire from a standing position at paper or electronic targets 10 metres away. It demands exceptional steadiness, concentration, and breath control. This is one of the most accessible precision shooting disciplines and an excellent starting point for beginners.

How It Works
The Basics
- Distance: Exactly 10 metres from firing line to target
- Position: Standing, unsupported (no artificial support)
- Caliber: 4.5mm (.177) air rifle pellets
- Power: Typically under 6 ft/lbs for match rifles
- Sights: Aperture (diopter) sights - no magnification
- Target: 10 concentric scoring rings, center 0.5mm diameter
Scoring
Targets have 10 scoring rings. The center (bull) scores 10.9 points (subdivided into tenths), decreasing to 1 point for the outermost ring. Electronic targets provide instant decimal scoring. A perfect score is 10.9 per shot.
Competition Format
Standard competitions involve 60 shots for qualification, with top shooters advancing to finals. Finals add elimination rounds where lowest-scoring shooters are progressively removed until the medal positions are decided.
Olympic Discipline
10m air rifle has been an Olympic event since 1984 (women) and 1988 (men). Mixed team events were added at Tokyo 2020. It’s governed internationally by ISSF and in GB by British Shooting.
