10m Air Pistol

Olympic one-handed precision discipline

Available at Pinhoe TSC

What is 10m Air Pistol?

10m air pistol is an Olympic shooting discipline where competitors fire one-handed from a standing position at targets 10 metres away. It’s an exceptional test of hand-eye coordination, steadiness, and mental control. Despite requiring only one hand, it’s one of the most challenging precision shooting disciplines.

10m air pistol one-handed stance

How It Works

The Basics

  • Distance: Exactly 10 metres from firing line to target
  • Position: Standing, one-handed (no support for shooting arm)
  • Caliber: 4.5mm (.177) air pistol pellets
  • Power: Typically under 6 ft/lbs for match pistols
  • Sights: Open iron sights - no magnification or lasers
  • Target: 10 concentric rings, smaller than rifle targets
  • Non-shooting hand: Must not touch pistol, body, or shooting arm

Scoring

The pistol target has 10 scoring rings with the center scoring 10.9 points (subdivided into tenths). Electronic targets provide instant decimal scoring. The target is significantly smaller than rifle targets - the 10-ring is only 11.5mm diameter.

Competition Format

Standard competitions involve 60 shots for qualification (typically shot in 6 series of 10 shots). Top 8 shooters advance to elimination finals where the lowest scorer is progressively removed until three remain for medals.

Olympic Heritage

Air pistol has been an Olympic event since Los Angeles 1984 (women) and Seoul 1988 (men). Mixed team events were introduced at Tokyo 2020, where one male and one female shooter compete as a pair.

Equipment Guide

For Beginners

Don’t worry about buying equipment initially. Clubs provide air pistols during beginner sessions. Focus on learning technique before investing in your own equipment.

Entry-Level Equipment (when ready)

  • Air Pistol: Entry-level match pistols (£200-£600) - Steyr, Feinwerkbau, Walther
  • Pellets: Match-grade .177 pellets (£8-£15 per tin of 500)
  • Shooting Glasses: Optional but helpful for eye dominance (£20-£100)
  • Shooting Shoes: Flat, stable shoes for competitions (£60-£120)
  • Pellet tester: Device to check pellet fit in barrel (£15-£40)

Advanced Equipment

Competition shooters use precision match pistols (£1,200-£2,500+) with anatomical grips, adjustable triggers, and balanced weight distribution. Custom grips molded to your hand can be ordered for perfect fit.

No Licence Required

Air pistols under 6 ft/lbs do not require a firearms certificate in the UK. Match air pistols are well below this limit. Must be 18+ to purchase, under-18s can shoot under supervision.

UK Competition Pathway

Training Tips for Beginners

Essential Techniques

  1. Master the grip: Consistent, comfortable grip with proper trigger finger placement
  2. Find your stance: Balanced stance with pistol arm extended naturally
  3. Align the sights: Equal light either side of front sight in rear notch
  4. Control breathing: Pause breathing during final aim and trigger release
  5. Smooth trigger: Straight back trigger pull without disturbing aim
  6. Hold control: Minimize arc of movement - perfection is impossible, consistency is key
  7. Mental routine: Identical pre-shot routine for every single shot

Dry Fire Training

Air pistol benefits greatly from dry fire practice (training without pellets). Many top shooters do more dry fire than live fire. It’s free, can be done at home, and builds muscle memory.

Common Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Arm Fatigue

Solution: Build arm strength gradually. Take breaks during practice. Ensure proper stance to distribute weight efficiently. Strengthen shoulder and arm muscles.

Challenge: Inconsistent Groups

Solution: Focus on grip consistency. Check sight alignment on every shot. Develop a repeatable routine. Keep shooting diary to identify patterns.

Challenge: Mental Pressure

Solution: Practice under pressure in club competitions. Focus on process not outcome. Develop mental reset routines between shots.

Challenge: Trigger Jerk

Solution: Isolate trigger finger movement. Practice dry fire extensively. Focus on smooth, steady pressure increase without anticipating the shot.
